The Science of Grounding

Seven studies are quoted over and over to sell earthing products. We read all of them, and this page sets out what each one actually reported, how small the samples were, and why the honest verdict is still promising but unproven.

The Short Answer

The grounding science quoted by sellers rests on seven frequently cited papers, and every one of them is small, short, or written by overlapping authors with connections to grounding product companies. The findings are genuinely interesting, particularly on cortisol and sleep, but the Cleveland Clinic is right to call the evidence preliminary. Larger independent trials are needed before anyone can say with confidence that grounding does what its fans claim.

If you have looked into earthing products at all, you will have met the claim that the benefits are backed by science. The grounding science behind that claim is thinner than the marketing suggests: seven papers, published between 2004 and 2015, do almost all of the work, and most of them are small pilot studies; the largest verified sample in the whole set is 12 subjects. This page reviews each of the seven using only what we could verify about them. For anyone arriving cold: grounding (or earthing) is the practice of keeping your body in electrical contact with the earth, either barefoot outdoors or indoors through conductive sheets and mats connected to the earth pin of a UK socket. All Seven Studies at a Glance

These are the seven papers that appear again and again in earthing marketing and on brand research pages. The table shows the first author, year, journal, sample size where we could verify one, and the headline finding as the paper itself framed it.

The Seven Studies, One by One

1. Ghaly and Teplitz (2004): Cortisol and Sleep

A 2004 pilot study in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine (12 subjects, 8 weeks) reported that grounding during sleep "reduces night-time levels of cortisol and resynchronises cortisol hormone secretion", with the changes most apparent in female participants (doi:10.1089/acm.2004.10.767). Subjects also gave subjective reports of improved sleep and reduced pain and stress. This is the paper you will see quoted most often, and it is the closest thing grounding has to a foundational study. The limits are just as important as the findings: 12 people is a tiny sample, and the sleep, pain and stress results were self-reported rather than measured. Interesting, yes. Proof, no.

2. Chevalier (2010): 40 Minutes on the Monitors

A 2010 paper in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine recorded pulse rate, respiratory rate, blood oxygenation, perfusion index, skin conductance and their variability during and after grounding subjects for 40 minutes. We could not verify a sample size, so treat it as a small pilot. Changes in physiological measures across a 40 minute session suggest the body registers something when grounded, which is a fair starting point for research, but a short lab session cannot establish any lasting effect, and the paper did not claim otherwise.

3. Brown, Chevalier and Hill (2010): Muscle Soreness

A 2010 pilot study of 8 subjects in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine examined whether grounding affected delayed-onset muscle soreness, the ache that follows unfamiliar exercise. Eight people is one of the smallest samples in the whole grounding literature. A pilot this size exists to justify a bigger trial, not to settle a question, and we would put no weight on it either way until larger independent work appears.

4. Sokal and Sokal (2011): Physiologic Processes

Published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine in 2011 under the title "Earthing the human body influences physiologic processes". We could not verify a sample size, so we class it as a small pilot. The title states an influence on physiologic processes, and the honest reading of this paper matches the rest of the field: something may be happening when the body is earthed, and bigger trials are needed to establish what, if anything, it means in practice.

5. Chevalier and Colleagues (2012): The Review Article

This 2012 paper in the Journal of Environmental and Public Health is a review article summarising the early grounding research rather than a new experiment. It is often cited as if it were independent confirmation, but its author list (Chevalier, Sinatra, Oschman and the Sokals) overlaps heavily with the primary studies it summarises. A summary of small studies written largely by the people who ran those studies is a useful map of the field; it is not fresh evidence, and it should not be counted twice.

6. Chevalier and Colleagues (2013): Blood Viscosity

A 2013 pilot study in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine measured blood viscosity in 10 subjects and reported a reduction after grounding. Blood viscosity is a genuine cardiovascular measure, and the paper's title connects it to cardiovascular disease, but a 10-person pilot cannot demonstrate anything about heart health outcomes. Nobody should read this study, or this page, as evidence that grounding prevents or treats cardiovascular disease. It does not show that, and anyone with heart health concerns should be talking to their GP, not to a bedding retailer.

7. Oschman, Chevalier and Brown (2015): Inflammation

Published in the Journal of Inflammation Research in 2015, this paper discusses grounding in relation to inflammation, the immune response and wound healing. We could not verify a sample size for the observations it draws on, so treat the underlying evidence as small pilot work. Its title reaches all the way to "prevention and treatment" of chronic inflammatory and autoimmune diseases, and in our view that is the clearest example of the grounding literature promising more than early evidence of this size can support. We cite the paper because it exists and is widely quoted, not because we endorse the framing.

The samples are small. The 2004 cortisol pilot had 12 subjects, the 2013 blood viscosity pilot had 10, and the 2010 muscle soreness pilot had 8. Studies this size are called pilots for a reason: they exist to decide whether a bigger trial is worth running. In grounding research, the bigger trials have not arrived, so the field is still standing on its pilots two decades after the first one.

The authorship overlaps, and it is not independent. Chevalier appears as an author on five of the seven papers, and several of the foundational papers share authors who are connected to grounding product companies. That does not automatically make the findings wrong, but it does mean the same small circle of researchers with a commercial interest produced most of the evidence, then wrote the review articles summarising that evidence. Independent replication, the normal test of a scientific claim, is largely missing.

Mainstream medicine calls it preliminary. The Cleveland Clinic describes grounding research as limited and preliminary and calls for larger studies. That is also our position. Grounding is not an NHS-recommended treatment for any condition, and no study on this page changes that.

We lay this out because it is our trust advantage, not despite it. We would rather you read the same papers with the sample sizes and author overlaps in plain view, then decide for yourself.

What Would Better Evidence Look Like?

The bar is not mysterious. Grounding claims would firm up with trials of hundreds of participants rather than dozens, run by research teams with no commercial connection to earthing products, using objective outcome measures rather than self-reports, and replicated by second teams getting similar results. None of the seven papers above clears that bar. Until something does, the fair summary of grounding science is: early signals worth studying, nothing proven, and no basis for medical claims.

Grounding Science Questions, Answered

Is grounding recommended by the NHS?

No. Grounding is not an NHS-recommended treatment for any condition, and no NHS guidance endorses earthing products. If you have a health concern, speak to your GP rather than treating a grounding sheet as a substitute for medical care.

Does the weak evidence mean grounding sheets are useless?

Not necessarily. Small studies and unproven claims are not the same as disproof, and some users report sleeping better on grounded bedding, which may or may not survive a properly controlled trial. Who should check with a doctor before trying grounding?

Anyone with a pacemaker or other implanted medical device, anyone pregnant, and anyone under medical care should ask their doctor before using grounding products. That is sensible caution rather than a known danger, and it is the same advice the reputable manufacturers give.

Seven papers, mostly pilots, mostly from one circle of authors, with the Cleveland Clinic labelling the whole field preliminary: that is the current state of grounding science, honestly told.
